ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
You-Ma-Cai is defined by three key Chinese characteristics: “You (油)”, “Ma (麻)”, and “Cai (彩)”.
You (油) – “Oil”
Refers to the highly glossy, oil-like leaf surface. The leaves have a bright, reflective, polished appearance, distinctly different from the matte surface of ordinary Clivia.
Ma (麻) – “Pitted Texture”
Describes the natural pits and uneven texture on the leaf surface. Each leaf has small indentations that create a strong three-dimensional effect. This textured surface becomes even more attractive as the plant matures and is one of the traits most sought after by collectors.
Cai (彩) – “Variegation”
Refers to the variegated color layers on the leaves, which are clear and vivid, adding depth and visual richness.
You-Ma-Cai is not limited to a single Clivia variety. Any cultivar can develop You-Ma-Cai traits as long as it displays the three key features: You (glossy surface), Ma (pitted texture), and Cai (variegation). Examples include Overlord, Sycee, Pearl-type, Doll-type, or even Technician Clivia.
Leaf length does not define You-Ma-Cai either, both short-leaf types, which align with current market preferences, and long-leaf types, which appear elegant, can also exhibit these traits.
Please note:
There is a small hole on the second-oldest leaf and a small crack on the third-oldest leaf, both clearly visible in the photos; all other leaves are healthy, and these minor flaws do not affect the plant’s growth or overall aesthetics.
